H.N. Werkman (1882-1945) Life & Work

This retrospective displayed printings and paintings by Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman (1882-1945). The artist and printer, from Groningen, was executed by the occupier just before the end of World War II. Werkman used art to find answers to questions pertaining the turbulent times he lived in: the war as well as the economic and cultural developments in Groningen. The self-will that characterises his work shows an artist who kept innovating and did not comply with rules imposed by others.
