Song Dong, Life is Art, Art is Life
The Groninger Museum presented the first major solo exhibition of one of the most important internationally operating Chinese artists of the moment: Song Dong (1966). Through his videos, installations, and photography, he addresses themes as transience, evanescence, and loss. Next to for example a map of the world made out of thousands of sweets, the installation Waste Not was displayed, which consisted of the household goods his mother, with her collector’s mania, compiled over the years: from radiators and remote controls to empty toothpaste tubes and soft-drink bottles. Following the display in Groningen, the exhibition travelled to Kunsthalle Düsseldorf.
